Turkiye to establish itself as a regional takaful centre

Türkiye is actively pursuing new measures to increase the inclusivity of its financial ecosystem, including strengthening the regulatory infrastructure and framework for takaful (participation insurance).

The Insurance and Private Pension Regulation and Supervision Authority’s (SEDDK) Vice President Ali Burak Kurtulan said this at the opening of DWIC Connect Istanbul on 7 July. He said takaful has gained momentum alongside the growth of participation banking and has steadily strengthened its institutional framework.

At present, eight companies operate fully in line with participation finance principles, accounting for about 7% of the country’s total insurance revenue.

Mr Kurtulan said the SEDDK will soon introduce new participation insurance regulations to further integrate takaful into the insurance ecosystem. Once completed, the framework will align Türkiye’s takaful sector with global standards through a comprehensive regulatory infrastructure, which the authority expects will attract new investment. “With these steps, we aim to transform Türkiye into a regional hub for takaful and cement our global position in participation finance,” he said. M
