Tunisia: Motorcycle insurance business surges on expanded engine capacity rules

The total number of insurance policies taken out for two-wheeled motorcycles in Tunisia is expected to reach nearly 40,900 by the end of 2026, representing an increase of around 100% compared to 2025. This indicates accelerated momentum because the number jumped by 27.4% to 20,398 in 2025.
In a statement to the Tunis Afrique Presse news agency, Acting Director General of the Tunisian Federation of Insurance Companies (FTUSA) Mr Imed Hamdi attributed the sales surge primarily to the expansion of insurance applications to be submitted to the FTUSA. This process now includes motorcycles with engine displacements of between 50 and 125 cc. Previously, it only applied to motorcycles with engine displacements below 50 cc.
The FTUSA centralises the distribution of motorcycle insurance applications to ensure that owners will not be refused coverage by insurance companies.
The FTUSA, through a platform, directs each applicant to the insurance company closest to their home and located in their governorate. Applications are distributed equitably among the companies, based on their share of the auto insurance market in 2024.
Despite the increasing number of motorcycle insurance applications, the coverage rate for motorcycles remains limited. Around 2m motorcycles are ridden in Tunisia, of which only 20,000 have official registration, according to the National Road Safety Observatory. M
