Kyrgyzstan: National insurer shares experience in takaful

The State Insurance Organisation (GSO), the leading national insurer in the Kyrgyz Republic, has shared its experience in the development of takaful in the country.
A GSO delegation participated in the 14th International Takaful Summit held in London from 30 June to 2 July where it exchanged GSO’s experience, conducted an analysis of current trends in global Islamic insurance and sought to establish direct contacts with leading foreign reinsurance companies, reported the information platform Open.KG.
Mr Baktygul Abdyjaliev, GSO’s Deputy Chairman spoke on the topic “Takaful in Central Asia: Unique Experience in Implementing Islamic Insurance in Kyrgyzstan at the Legislative Level.”
Kyrgyzstan is currently working on a legislative framework for takaful. In June, the Ministry of Economy and Commerce presented proposed changes to insurance legislation that would officially establish the status of Islamic insurance in the country. For example, under the revised legislation, a takaful policy will be equivalent to a conventional insurance policy. This will allow car owners to choose between a traditional policy and its Islamic counterpart. Sanctions for operating a vehicle without mandatory insurance coverage will be equally applied to drivers who do not have either a conventional policy or an equivalent Islamic insurance policy. M
