| 30 Jul 2026

The number of insurance fraud reports fell by 12.4% to 2,212 in the first half of this year, compared to the corresponding half of 2025, according to data from the Insurance Fraud Prevention Bureau (SISEB) of the Insurance Information and Monitoring Centre.

According to the data, 1,665 of the fraud notifications were made by insurance companies, representing a 15.7% decrease compared to 1H2025. The number of reports from other sources was 547, a decline of 0.4% year on year.

Auto insurance

When evaluated by insurance branch, the majority of insurance fraud reports were concentrated in auto insurance. In the first six months, 2,047 cases reported to SISEB were related to motor insurance. Auto insurance was followed by life insurance with 63 reports, fire insurance with 30 reports, and health insurance with seven reports.

Fake "hit and run" cases

Among the fraud methods reported by insurance companies, the most striking increase was seen in "hit-and-run" claims. These accounted for 7.2% of the total number of reports in the first half of 2025, and rose to 28.4% in the first six months of 2026, becoming the most common type of fraud reported.

Despite the decrease in the number of insurance fraud reports, organised fraud attempts continue to pose a significant risk to the insurance sector.
