Nigeria:Surge in primary healthcare visits and reduced maternal deaths

| 16 Dec 2025

Nigeria has experienced a notable increase in the utilisation of primary healthcare (PHC) facilities between 2023 and 2025, according to the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare Muhammad Pate.

Mr Pate also reported a decline in maternal and newborn deaths during the same period, reflecting progress in the country’s public health outcomes.

He said that federally supported PHCs recorded over 80m visits in the first half of 2025, compared with about 20m in 2023. He described the surge as early gains from ongoing health sector reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

According to him, the surge reflects improved access to preventive and basic health services, including immunisation, antenatal care and treatment of common illnesses.
