Turkiye:Majority of farmers and farmland remain uninsured

| 01 Jun 2025

Around four in 10 (38.6%) of farmers in Turkiye are covered by insurance while 17% of agricultural land in the country is insured, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

In absolute terms, of the 2.34m farmers registered in the country’s farmer registration system, 903,674 have agricultural insurance. Around 36m acres of the 213m acres of agricultural land in the country are insured.

The state paid TRY6bn ($153m) in premiums for agricultural insurance last year, reported Finans Gundem citing data from the ministry. Despite this support, agricultural insurance premiums are still seen as unaffordable by farmers.

This indicates that farmers are producing agricultural products without protection against natural disasters due to high premiums and insufficient support.
