ME conflict:Safety is still an issue at the Strait despite cessation of hostilities

| 18 Jun 2026

Governments in several countries, such as Japan, have released statements welcoming the Iran-US memorandum of understanding (MoU ), mentioning in particular, free and safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

At the G7 working lunch summit, titled "Addressing crises and ensuring stability in the Middle East", which also included leaders from Egypt, Qatar and the UAE, Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae emphasised the importance of opposing unjustified export restrictions and maintaining free and transparent trade.

Ms Takaichi also stressed the need to ensure free and safe navigation through all sea lanes, including the Strait of Hormuz, which is essential for global trade.

However, one of the reasons preventing marine traffic from returning to pre-conflict levels is the threat of mines, reported the BBC. For instance, the Omani Maritime Security Centre has issued warnings about floating objects suspected to be mines as late as May 2026.
