Congo:Political violence premiums spike attributed to fighting in Goma

| 05 Feb 2026

Insurance premiums for political violence (PV) in the Democratic Republic of Congo spiked as much as tenfold in 2025 due to unrest.

While this has given insurers a boost, the rising cost is squeezing miners, reported the news agency Reuters.

March 23 Movement rebels, backed by Rwanda, took the eastern city of Goma in January 2025.

Goma is the provincial capital of North Kivu close to the DRC’s eastern border with Rwanda. The M23 rebels’ military offensive, which has been ongoing since 2022, seized territory in both the North and South Kivu provinces throughout January 2025. The M23 is made up primarily of Tutsis and says that it is fighting to protect the interests of the Tutsi minority. The rebels target mineral-rich eastern regions in their offensive.

SFA Congo Advisor to the Board, Valery Safarian, told Reuters that political violence premiums “spiked five to 10 times after the events”.

The surge in demand was attributed to companies rushing to secure or renew coverage, SFA General Manager Xavier Denys told Reuters.
