Moody's Ratings (Moody's) has upgraded the insurance financial strength rating (IFSR) of GIG Insurance-Egypt to 'Ba1' from 'Ba2'. The outlook remains positive.
This rating action follows the recent upgrade by Moody’s of the sovereign rating for the Government of Egypt to ‘B3’ from ‘Caa1’, with a positive outlook, Moody’s adds.
GIG Egypt is a subsidiary of Kuwait-based Gulf Insurance Group (GIG Group; A2 stable). All the other ratings of the GIG Group are unaffected by this rating action on GIG Egypt.
Ratings rationale
The upgrade of GIG Egypt's IFSR reflects the linkage of the company's credit profile to the sovereign, together with continued implicit and explicit support from its parent that supports GIG Egypt's IFSR being five notches above the ‘B3’ Egyptian sovereign rating and two notches above the local currency country ceiling of ‘Ba3’.
Country ceilings indicate the highest rating level that would generally be assigned to the financially strongest issuers domiciled in a country, absent special characteristics that Moody’s believes give them a lower risk of government interference than is indicated by the ceiling.
While GIG Egypt's IFSR has been upgraded above the country ceiling, because of the strength of parental support, its IFSR remains below GIG Group's ‘A2’ IFSR and reflects the Moody’s view that parental support, including through the guarantee agreement, only partially overcomes the undiversifiable country risks captured in the local currency country ceiling for Egypt.
Stand-alone credit profile
On a standalone basis, GIG Egypt's credit profile reflects its top three position in the Egyptian property and casualty insurance market combined with a well-established brand, good product diversification, strong capital adequacy and very good operating profitability.
However, despite GIG Egypt's strong business and financial profile, its stand-alone credit profile – before the benefit of parental support – is partially constrained at one notch above the Egyptian sovereign rating of ‘B3’ due to its significant holdings of government debt, amounting to around 140% of shareholders' equity at year-end 2025. In addition, GIG Egypt's other key credit fundamentals, specifically asset quality, capitalisation and financial flexibility, are also correlated with – and thus linked to – the economic and market conditions in Egypt.
Outlook
GIG Egypt's outlook remains positive and continues to be aligned with the outlook for the Government of Egypt, indicating that any potential positive sovereign rating action is likely to exert upward pressure on the company's IFSR.
