West Africa:French health insurer enters the region via acquisition of digital health company

| 09 Sep 2026

French health insurance specialist Alan has acquired Tanel, a digital health company based in Dakar, operating in Senegal and Cote d'Ivoire. Tanel marks Alan's entry into West Africa.

Tanel develops digital tools designed to facilitate access to healthcare, the management of claims, and the tracking of benefits. It helps businesses simplify the management of their employees' health insurance coverage.

Alan Co-Founder and CEO, Mr Jean-Charles Samuelian-Werve, said in a post in his LinkedIn account, “Why Senegal and Cote d’Ivoire? Because this is where the future of health is being built, fast. A young, growing population. Companies scaling. Digital adoption moving quicker than anywhere I've seen. A EUR600m ($697m) health insurance market growing ~10% a year — and expectations from employees rising even faster. The need is immediate.”

He said that Tanel was founded in 2021 by Messrs Mouhamed Ndoye and Makhtar Diop, who will lead Alan in Africa, with the French company’s international teams behind them.

Founded in 2016, Alan has a presence in France, Belgium, Spain, and Canada. At the end of August 2026, Alan announced its intention to accelerate its development in new markets, beyond its existing operations in Europe and North America.
