The Government of Tanzania has commenced the country's Universal Health Insurance Scheme, also known as Bima ya Afya kwa Wote. It came into effect on 26 January 2026.
Minister of Health, Mohamed Mchengerwa, said the scheme is meant to ensure all Tanzanians have access to quality, sustainable and reliable healthcare services through registered health insurance schemes, according to the news platform Tanzania Invest.
According to Mr Mchengerwa, coverage is offered to the principal member, their spouse and up to four dependents. The article also stated that healthcare services under the scheme are provided through health facilities contracted by health insurance schemes and are subject to the national referral system.
The scheme requires households of up to six members to enrol by paying an annual premium of TZS150,000 ($59), said the article.
