Saudi Arabia: Employers penalised for failing to provide health insurance to workers

Source: Middle East Insurance Review | Mar 2025

Saudi Arabian health authorities have imposed penalties on several employers, who failed to provide health insurance cover to their employees and families.

According to a press release issued by the Council of Health Insurance Council (CHIC) of Saudi Arabia in January 2025, Article 14 of the kingdom’s health insurance law stipulates that if an employer fails to subscribe or pay health insurance premiums for their employees and eligible dependents, they are required to pay the outstanding premiums along with a fine not exceeding the annual subscription per individual. Additionally, violators may face temporary or permanent restrictions on recruiting workers.

These measures align with the CHIC’s mission to enforce mandatory health insurance coverage, safeguard the rights of health insurance beneficiaries and empower stakeholders in achieving transparency and fairness. The number of offending employers was not revealed by the council. M
