The digital transformation of travel insurance

Rami RishmaniThe travel insurance industry, more than any other, is becoming digital-native and experience-driven. Embedded coverage, AI-powered personalisation and mobile-first solutions are the name of the game. ISI Assist’s Mr Rami Rishmani explains how technology is being leveraged to drive accessibility, efficiency and seamless customer service.

The travel insurance industry is undergoing a rapid digital transformation driven by evolving consumer expectations, technological advancements and the increasing adoption of online travel booking platforms. This shift is particularly prominent in North America and Europe and is gradually gaining momentum in the MENA region.

Several important trends are fuelling this transition:
Embedded insurance
Many airlines, OTAs (Online Travel Agencies), and tour operators now offer insurance as an integrated add-on during the booking process. This seamless approach allows travellers to purchase coverage effortlessly, with specialised travel insurance providers partnering with these platforms to embed policies directly into the customer journey.

AI-powered personalisation
AI is playing a crucial role in tailoring insurance offerings. By analysing traveller data, AI-driven models provide personalised policies based on trip duration, destination and risk factors, such as weather conditions. Additionally, dynamic pricing adjusts policy costs in real-time based on traveller demographics and external variables.

Instant claims processing and automation
Digital-first insurers and travel assistance providers leverage AI and automation to streamline claims processing, minimising paperwork and reducing wait times for faster, hassle-free reimbursements.

Mobile-first experience
Travel insurance providers are increasingly focusing on mobile apps for policy management, claims processing and emergency assistance. Some apps offer location-based services, guiding travellers to nearby medical facilities, while others integrate telemedicine features, allowing users to consult with doctors remotely.

How is ISA Assist catering to this digital shift?
Digitalisation has made travel insurance more accessible, transparent and user-friendly, catering to modern travellers who expect seamless, instant solutions. To remain competitive in this evolving landscape, ISA Assist has adopted a multi-faceted approach that includes technology integration, enhanced customer experiences and strategic partnerships.

Over the past few years, we have heavily invested in upgrading our digital infrastructure and IT capabilities, embracing an API-driven approach that allows seamless integration of travel insurance products into the customer journey. This has enabled us to collaborate with airlines, OTAs and travel platforms, offering insurance directly at the point of purchase.

Our user-friendly mobile app prioritises emergency assistance and claims management, allowing travellers to locate nearby medical facilities, instantly connect with our medical team and submit claims effortlessly.

Additionally, our actuarial team leverages big data analytics for risk assessment and pricing optimisation. By analysing travel behaviours, we continuously refine our pricing models and coverage options to address emerging risks, ensuring an optimised and enhanced customer experience.
