AXA Assurance Maroc has announced the appointment of Gilles Fromageot as CEO of AXA Morocco and AXA CIMA regions, encompassing operations in Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Gabon and Senegal, according to media outlet Morocco World News.
The appointment, subject to regulatory approvals, will take effect in February.
Mr Fromageot brings 25 years of insurance industry experience and currently serves as AXA XL’s regional manager for Asia, where he oversees the company’s growth strategy and market expansion. He has held various senior positions within the French AXA Group across multiple regions, including Spain, France, South Korea and Singapore.
The incoming CEO will succeed Meryem Chami, who is departing the company for personal reasons.
Ms Chami joined AXA in 2020 as CEO of its Morocco branch and AXA CIMA entities, later assuming the role of CEO for AXA Africa in 2023.
Under her five-year tenure, the company experienced significant transformation and development across its African operations.
AXA said that the new nomination demonstrates its commitment to reinforcing its client protection strategy and development across French-speaking Africa.
The leadership change follows other significant corporate developments at AXA Morocco in recent years.
As of 2020, AXA Assurance Maroc held a 10.76% market share, making it Morocco’s sixth-largest insurance provider.
In 2022, the company went through a major restructuring with AXA Partners selling its 80% stake to Expanso, a holding company owned by businessman Mehdi Tazi.
