Participants at an inter-regional meeting on disaster management and rescue in Tunisia have called for the establishment of a national disaster risk management centre.
The national centre will group together experts to plan and prepare studies on gaps in road infrastructure, bridges, rivers, agricultural and forest areas, and on human and material resources to strengthen disaster management capacity and protect citizens and their property in times of disasters, reported local media.
There was also a call for creating a local regional committee to oversee disaster prevention and relief management.
Emphasis was also placed on the need to develop legislation for disaster mitigation, to clearly define the role of each organisation at the regional and national levels and to involve civil society in the prevention and fight against disasters.
